Suzanne Vega - Marlene on the Wall (A&M 275 - 1985)

The mid-1980s was an interesting time for folk music with the re-emergence of singer-songwriters being once again accepted in the genre. Rarely did a female American singer-songwriter make it onto the cover of Folk Roots magazine, but there she was in the July 1986 edition, right there on the cover with her debut album topping the magazine's album charts at the same time. From the album came this single, which although being immediately accessible to listeners as well as being remembered for its theme of loneliness, the songwriter gazing up at a poster of the German actress Marlene Dietrich, the single surprisingly only reached number 83 in the UK chart.
